Expectations of new generation of journalists – as reflected in training programs by SPJ

The ongoing training programs offered by the Society of Professional Journalists offer a glimpse into what the industry expects of the new generation of journalists.

What needs to be trained is obviously what the newsroom directors need of job applicants, and they fall into the following categories:

  • Mobile newsgathering: use smartphones to report, edit and share stories.
  • Use of social media: use the right tools to talk to a source, interview a subject or collaborate with a fellow reporter; to increase the efficiency and reach; and to promote yourself.
  • Multimedia production: audio, video and images for the web.
  • Writing for the web: write in styles that suit online audiences.

So how shall we educators incorporate them into our journalism curriculum?
